May 1 is Maifest. We really got lucky because we saw the raising of the tree, which happens every 5 years. The tree braches are from all the guilds, like the butcher, carpenter, etc. Once a tree is chosen, it is guarded 24/7 so no one steals the 35m long 3.2 ton tree. One if our surrounding towns had their Maibaum stolen. If your town's tree is stolen then you must buy everyone off with beer to ger it back. As it turned out the robbing town didn't follow the steeling rules correctly and ended up helping the town raise their own tree. funny, huh.
We ended up living in Murnau the year of the Schäfflettanz, which happens every 7 years. Every 35 years both the Schäfflertanz and raising if the Maibaum happen in the same year.
